Living on the Gold Coast

The Gold Coast is renowned as Australia's premier holiday destination and the casual resort atmosphere makes it appealing to visitors of all ages and interests.  Consequently, the Gold Coast offers students more than a place to study; it is such a diverse and exciting place to live.

Australia's Gold Coast region offers 70 kilometres of uninterrupted coastline of beautiful golden beaches, with lush subtropical rainforests only a 30 minute drive away. The hinterland offers many contrasting activities from bush walking, horse riding and hot air ballooning to visiting art galleries and museums as well as great restaurants and craft shops.

Entertainment

Recreation is an important part of a healthy lifestyle. The Gold Coast and surrounding areas offer a wide range of activities and tours that give you a chance to meet new friends and have fun.

For international students, activities are not only an enjoyable way to use English in a natural and relaxing environment but also a great way to meet and interact with Australians.

Here are some things to do whilst studying at AICA
  • Wildlife parks
  • Kayaking with dolphins
  • Climbing Mount Warning
  • Surfing lessons
  • Mountain biking tours
  • Scuba diving
  • Trips to weekend markets
  • Whale watching
  • Skydiving
  • Theme parks
  • Eco tours
  • Day trips to Byron Bay

Cost of living

The average international student in Australia spends about $320 per week on accommodation, food, clothing, entertainment, transport, international and domestic travel, telephone, incidental costs.

While this is a realistic guide, it is important to remember that individual circumstances will vary by location, course and lifestyle. Studying and living on the Gold Coast is generally more economical than in the capital cities of Australia.

When you are structuring your budget also take into account the following:
  • tuition fees
  • health insurance
  • working while you study

Beach & Sun Safety

With 300 days of sunshine each year, the Gold Coast enjoys a mild sub-tropical climate, with summer temperatures ranging from 20-35°C during the months September to April. Winter temperatures range from 10-25°C.

The sun in Australia is intense and caution should be taken when spending long periods of time outdoors. Any sun injury enough to cause tanning will increase your risk of skin cancer and premature aging of the skin. Include wearing sunglasses with UV protection, wearing a hat and a long sleeved shirt (remember that if you can see through the clothing the sun will also get through), taking extra precautions between 10am and 3pm when the sun's rays are most damaging, applying sun-screen with sun protection factor (SPF) of 15+ or more every few hours.

Many of our beaches are quite long making it difficult if not impossible to patrol their entire length. The SLSC of Australia does an excellent job of patrolling our beaches and bathers should always listen to their advice with regard to safe swimming zones. You should always swim on patrolled beaches between the red and yellow flags and cooperate with the directions of the lifeguards on duty.
