COURSE DESCRIPTION
A community service role assists individuals, families and groups with social, emotional and financial difficulties to improve quality of life by educating and supporting them and working towards change in their social environment.
WORK ROLE COULD INCLUDE
- provide support while exploring alternatives with clients who experience difficulties such as marital problems, unemployment, illness and drug abuse
- assesses risks and provides intensive short-term crisis counselling for victims of domestic violence, child abuse, disasters and other crises
- assist in establishing or administering a neighbourhood house, community group, employment training program or other service
- evaluate data and write reports including submissions requesting funding for continuing programs and new projects
- advocate on behalf of clients
- arrange for clients to be referred to other appropriate specialist professionals, support workers or community agencies
- arrange, coordinate and evaluate support services such as home and community care for elderly and disabled clients
- research and analyse community issues, needs and problems
- develop, evaluate and maintain community resources and programs
- evaluate resource devoted to health, welfare, recreation, housing, employment, training and other community facilities or programs
- interpret identified needs for community organisations, social agencies and groups, stimulate their interest and enlist cooperation
- provide leadership and coordinate programs
- prepare reports, budgets and policies

Diploma of Community Services Work -: This course runs for two years and covers a diverse range of topics including OH&S, counselling, community development and case management . The course includes 400 hours of work experience. Graduates of this course will find work in the Community Services industry and will operate at an advanced skill level and may also have the responsibility for the supervision of other staff and volunteers.
